5Solid Equipment
By Rick
We are offgrid and have 3 living locations to power. There is an old Trace SW inverter at one location and a pair of Outback VFX series inverters at the other. For the newest house we decided to try a Magnum product.A while back, I wrote an article for an (our) website and found the research on the popular Outback and Magnum equipment was interesting to say the least. Our Outbacks were purchased when Outback was owned by the guys that actually built Trace inverters and later started Outback. Today, that ain't the case. Outbacks are made in a country far, far away and under a different kind of management.Magnum on the other hand is built in the USA. If you have a problem, you probably will talk to a guy that is on the line building the things. I don't know if you have experienced that type of customer service but it is like the 'old days' when companies really wanted your business and offered quality support. If you don't read between the lines very well, I'll just say that Magnum will be the only name showing up on the inverter board. As for the MMS1012:1) It is compact and quiet. That is a plus in a smaller house/cabin or RV where space is tight and the inverter may be located in the immediate living are. Unlike the Trace and Outback, there is no perceptible humming.2) The directions are easy to follow and wiring is clearly marked. It's simple to operate, push the power button and it is on, push it again and it is off. Not much to guess at there folks. If you are trying to save the batteries, guess you could shut it off but it comes programmed to operate in the search mode. The inverter continually hunts for a load, otherwise is is powered off. If you need the inverter to stay on, there are 2 options. A 5 watt load will keep the inverter on continuously or get an ME-RC50 remote display. With the remote display you can change the operating mode and adjust the battery parameters as well as use the equalize mode. (A lot of people get away with simply discharging and charging deep cycle batteries but there is a lot more to battery longevity than that. If you are going to use one of these things, it might save you some money on batteries if you learn to properly maintain them. And for that, yes, you need the ME-RC50.)3) It has a PFC charger. Let's just say that you get more charge for your gasoline with the PFC charger. It also play nicely with our inverter type generators. With some inverter/chargers, as the charge rate falls off the generator has a tendency to start surging. So far the MMS1012 hasn't caused this problem.4) Sinewave output.Well, I think you know where I stand on the Magnum products overall and the MMS1012 has performed its job flawlessly, so far.
