Variac is a variable transformer and a great device for quality control testing, equipment testing on low and high voltage, control over heat, speed, and more.
However in order to purchase the right variac, it is critical that you know the amp usage by your electronic device. It is always best to be conservative otherwise you risk destroying the variac and it can be very dangerous. For example, if your device requires 5 amp, buy the variac with up to 10 amp. A rating of 300VA means that at 100volt, the unit can sustain at maximum 3amp. If at 120 volt the unit can sustain at 2.5amp

I have two of these controllers/transformers and I feel that they are a well functioning, smooth running product for my need. I've not had a problem with either unit and these babies are used a lot. So far, so good.Add 5-15-13Both units have been running with inline fans 24/7. The sensitive incremental adjustment is outstanding. This has been a good purchase. Very happy.

i've been using fan speed controllers for noise control by trying to throttle down the speed maybe 30% and all of the "speedster" style controllers cause the fan to hum. the hum isn't loud but loud enough that you get this feeling that the fan doesn't like it... i know that not giving the proper sine wave along with the voltage is not good for motors so i bought one of these variac units. sure it was about the cost of two speedster controllers; but i can throttle down the fan with ZERO hum!!! the resolution of speed range is really nice and the volt meter lets you know where your at electrically speaking... i will recommend these for my indoor growing clients and greenhouse people that want a quality speed controller....update; i am now ordering a second for a second fan... this is a really great rig for speed control without hum... none of my clients seem to grasp the idea of throttling down a fan with no hum no matter how many times i tell them about this but that is their noisy problem, not mine...

So far it works excellently for this type of motor.(cannot be slowed properly with pulse width modulation)Will update if the product lasts a long time.
