If you are using the alligator clips to connect directly to large 12 volt battery, the unit performs adequately. Understandably, most users draw input power from a cigarette lighter plug. Anytime you draw power from a cigarette lighter you must necessarily lower your expectations because of the cigarette lighter wiring, but reliable performance at lower power, such as 100 watts, should clearly be expected. I have owned previous 400 watt units which easily provided 100 watts with the car turned off. Higher loads depress the voltage at the lighter plug and the inverter will trip when the input voltage crosses below a voltage threshold (not necessarily because the amp limit is reached). The specified input voltage for the Whistler Pro-400W is very close to 12 volts. Whistler's own specifications for this model indicate a lower limit of 11 volts +/- .5 volt (as high as 11.5 volts). This is an extremely tight margin and lets you know you're likely to have trouble. I found this out in hindsight when my Whistler Pro-400W would trip off under extremely light loads when the car was off or idling. The unit was somewhat operable with light loads, but only when the car was at speed (with the alternator running fast).In general, the unit is unusable. I have returned the unit for a refund.
