Even when the unit isn't charging, the large noisy fan operates at full speed. A waste of electricity (since the unit isn't doing anything but monitoring the battery at that stage) and as noisy as a small engine. I read many bad reviews about Xantrex, but thought I'd try it out because it's so cheap. What could go wrong, right? Trust the bad reviews... this is definitely a case where you get what you pay for.

Maybe the larger ones are better and maybe they have improved them, who knows. As inverters they are fine. As battery chargers they are worthless on any batteries i have connected them to.

By D. Treff
I installed the HF1000 on my boat over the weekend. So far, it is inverting and charging properly. The install went very smooth. This unit was a replacement for an older inverter/charger that gave up the ghost. This unit is half the size and 1/3 the weight of the one it replaces, and is still rated at 1000w output. It powered my small microwave while in inverter mode without breaking a sweat. I see all the bad reviews about poor quality and not so great customer service, so I bought an extended warranty from my retailer. Any issues, I can return it and get a replacement, no questions asked, no dealing with Xantrex. The only complaints I have are that the "handy" mounting template was not so handy because the mounting holes did not line up accurately. Check your unit against the template before you use it to drill holes! Also, the unit is slightly noisy when charging, especially in bulk mode. Not a huge deal for me because it's installed in a compartment which mutes it considerably.PROS:Small form factorLighter weight than others in this power classEase of installationCONS:A little noisy when chargingMounting template was inaccurateNo echo charge output for starting battery
