Variac is a variable transformer and a great device for quality control testing, equipment testing on low and high voltage, control over heat, speed, and more. However in order to purchase the right variac, it is critical that you know the amp usage by your electronic device. It is always best to be conservative otherwise you risk destroying the variac and it can be very dangerous. For example, if your device requires 5 amp, buy the variac with up to 10 amp. A rating of 1000VA means that at 100volt, the unit can sustain at maximum 10amp. If at 120 volt the unit can sustain at 8.3amp

Just "OK"

Quality of construction less than expected. Unit hums under any load - even a few LED light strings. The more load, the louder. I cannot bear the sound when load is more than 100 watts. The variac portion does work, but is jerky in the output instead of being smoothly variable, probably from uneveness on the contact.At least the unit has good isolation as advertised. That was my major concern.

Great for old radio work.

This transformer has been very handy in old radio/electronics repair and restoration. The isolation function is required and the variac capability built in with it is awesome...less bench space. Almost daily use for two months.
